Dr Vannessa Hearman is Senior Lecturer in Indonesian Studies and a historian of Southeast Asia. Her research deals with the Indonesian 1965-66 anti-communist violence, the politics of memory and human rights, and transnational activism related to Indonesia and Timor-Leste. She is the author of Unmarked Graves: Death and Survival in the Anti-Communist Violence in East Java, Indonesia (NUS Press), as well as academic articles and book chapters. She writes for or provides media commentary in outlets such as ABC-RN, Channel News Asia, Inside Indonesia, The Conversation, New Mandala and the Diplomat. She is a NAATI certified Indonesian language interpreter and translator.
