Research interests

Sarah’s research interests span rural health education and practice, self-regulated learning, problem based learning, curriculum design and evaluation, and the student experience.

Sarah adopts a socio-cultural lens in framing her research and is experienced in both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis.

Current projects include:

  • Student predispositions for SRL and factors which mediate this in online environments
  • Using a Community of Inquiry Model to analyse student discourse in an online PBL task
  • Student-teacher misperceptions in online learning

Personal profile

Sarah has been with CSU, Orange, since 2008 where she was the program leader for the Bachelor of Clinical Science and instituted problem based learning (PBL) in that course. She has worked in health professions education and evaluation at the University of Newcastle, University of Sydney, and School of Rural Health (USyd) prior to CSU. Her role at USyd encompassed leading the evaluation and of and contributing to curriculum development within the medical and dental programs over a number of years.

Sarah has worked as a curriculum, research and evaluation consultant, and was secretary of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators 2007-2012. Her most recent role involved the evaluation of the Transform Online Learning initiative at CSU.

At Three Rivers, Sarah is leading a team of clinical educators to facilitate positive and impactful rural placement experiences for students, as well as liaise with clinicians and health providers in the communities to support supervision, training, and workforce capacity in our region.


Sarah has a doctorate in Educational Psychology and is a strong advocate for student-centred approaches to learning and teaching, reflective practice, and enjoys collaborating with others, actively fostering this wherever possible. She has consulted on the design and delivery of face to face and online PBL in a number of courses at CSU and has previously taught Research in Clinical Practice, Reflective Clinical Practice, Research Methods in the Clinical Sciences, and Research for Health Practice subjects across Physiotherapy and Clinical Science courses.

Sarah is experienced in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, having also designed and delivered subjects for the Masters of Medical Education at USyd. She has designed and delivered subjects both face to face and in online formats, and contributed to curriculum design and evaluation with dentistry at USyd and CSU.
