Associate Professor Sanjyot Vagholkar is Deputy Director of Primary Care at MQ Health and is a general practitioner in the GP Clinic at MQ Health. She is currently convener of the Primary Care, Wellbeing and Cancer course in Year 2 of the Macquarie MD program.
A/Prof Vagholkar graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1989 and completed her internship and residency at Royal North Shore and Hornsby Hospitals. Following this she undertook post-graduate training in general practice, working in various practices in Sydney and rural NSW. During this training she completed an academic registrar term and this was the start of an academic career which has seen her work with the medical programs at USyd and UNSW prior to joining Macquarie University. She is experienced in clinical skills and general practice teaching and remains conjoint Associate Professor with UNSW.
A/Prof Vagholkar works in the field of primary care research with a focus on prevention and management of chronic disease, in particular cardiovascular and respiratory disease, and health systems research. Her PhD thesis explored the topic of cardiovascular absolute risk assessment and the impact of its use on prescribing of medications for hypertension and lipids. She has experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Throughout her academic career, A/Prof Vagholkar has been a practicing GP, working in northern and previously south-western Sydney for over twenty years. She supervises medical students and GP registrars in practice and is an examiner for the RACGP Fellowship exams. A/Prof Vagholkar enjoys working with the clinicians and academics at MQ Health to develop an integrated health care service that incorporates teaching and research.
