Personal profile
Biography
I am a Senior Lecturer in Science Communication and an internationally-recognised expert in interdisciplinary studies, with a background in environmental science. I have an MA in Higher Education and am a Senior Fellow of Advance HE. I am also the Chief Executive Editor of Geoscience Communication, co-director of the Manchester Game Studies Network, and founder of the poetry journal Consilience.
Teaching
I am the Programme Leader for Science Communication at UWA, and run the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with my colleague Dr Heather Bray.
If you are interested in studying with me as a PhD student, I currently have two opportunities available. One of these is about using poetry to diversify science, and the other one is based around making a boardgame to communicate science to different audiences.
Research interests
My research involves looking at how poetry and games can be used to start conversations between scientists and non-scientists, giving voice to audiences that are otherwise under-heard and underserved by science and science communication. This approach yields information and processes that are of use to both policymakers and the communities that I work with. It is also valuable to scientists, as it enables them to incorporate local knowledge into their research, helping to ensure that it is of greater benefit to the wider society.
