I am a plant biochemist, with many years of experience in academic and industrial settings. I have in-depth experience in and knowledge of a many disciplines that contribute to plant biochemistry, including plant physiology, molecular biology, bioanalytical chemistry and organic chemistry. My research has had a significant impact on my field and has been cited over 300 times.
Science is best learned through discovery. Students understand and retain concepts best when course content is delivered via multiple platforms and in multiple contexts. In my teaching, I aim to achieve this through combining traditional lectures, tests and practical laboratories, with small group discussions, interactive classroom activities, group assignments, short research projects and field work. I aim to align the theory taught in lectures with practical experiences and research projects in the laboratories. I also stay abreast of the scientific literature, incorporate the latest research findings into my teaching where appropriate and give students access to high-quality online content to reinforce concepts taught in class. Furthermore, I endeavour to connect my classes with relevant industries, through guest lecturers or visits to industry sites, so that students can understand the important role of science in industry.
My research is aimed at understanding energy use and efficiency in plants, with a particular focus on protein synthesis and degradation.
