Laura Dales lectures in Asian Studies at the University of Western Australia. Her research focuses mainly on gender and contemporary Japan: from feminism, agency and women's groups, to marriage, singlehood and friendship.
She has recently finished an Australia Research Council DECRA project examining intimacy beyond the family in contemporary Japan, and teaches units across Japanese language and Asian Studies.

Roles and responsibilities
Laura is program coordinator for the Master of Asian Studies, and Associate Graduate Research Coordinator for the School of Social Sciences.
She also organises the regular Asian Studies Research Seminar Series.
Research interests and publication themes include women’s groups, sexuality and gender in Japan, agency, ethnography and marriage and singlehood throughout Asia.
