Personal profile

Research interests

My research explores the relationship between law and ethics at both theoretical and applied levels. I am interested in the ways in which ethical norms and relations are embodied in social practices and how these practices, in turn, provide the normative basis for legal and social institutions. My work has made significant contributions to understanding the nature and scope of legal and moral obligations, as well as the role of ethics in legal reasoning. I have also produced significant bodies of work on constitutional law, rape and sexual assault law, international humanitarian law and dispute resolution.

Statement for HDR students

I have successfully supervised nine PhD candidates to completion and am currently working with several other students. I have supervised theses in legal philosophy, normative and applied ethics, constitutional law and theory, international humanitarian law (or the law of armed conflict) and dispute resolution, among other areas.

My current students are conducting research on topics such as:

  • Citizenship law and cosmopolitan justice
  • Theories of legal impunity
  • Autonomous weapons and international humanitarian law
  • The natural law theory of John Calvin
  • Duties of confidentiality in mediation
