Research activity per year
My research explores the relationship between law and ethics at both theoretical and applied levels. I am interested in the ways in which ethical norms and relations are embodied in social practices and how these practices, in turn, provide the normative basis for legal and social institutions. My work has made significant contributions to understanding the nature and scope of legal and moral obligations, as well as the role of ethics in legal reasoning. I have also produced significant bodies of work on constitutional law, rape and sexual assault law, international humanitarian law and dispute resolution.
I have successfully supervised nine PhD candidates to completion and am currently working with several other students. I have supervised theses in legal philosophy, normative and applied ethics, constitutional law and theory, international humanitarian law (or the law of armed conflict) and dispute resolution, among other areas.
