Research engagement

Jennie has made distinguished contributions to the scientific understanding and clinical treatment of anxiety disorders in young people. Her work has improved the quality of life for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. Her work with the greatest impact on international practice is her involvement in the development and evaluation of the Cool Kids suite of programs, interventions programs for anxious young people used around the world.

Research student supervision

Jennie supervises research students in Honours, Masters and PhD programs. She was awarded the Macquarie University Supervisor of the Year award in 2019. Topics include: child mental health, the role of famililal and environmental factors in the development of anxiety disorders in children and young people, improving treatment for anxious youth.


Jennie Hudson, BA(Hons) MClinPsych PhD FASSA FAPS, is a Professor within the Department of Psychology and the Director of the Centre for Emotional Health, Macquarie University.  Jennie completed her clinical Masters and PhD at Macquarie University and a postdoctoral fellowship at Temple University, Philadelphia. She was a visiting fellow at Magdalen College, University of Oxford and also at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London.


Jennie teaches assessment and treatment on the Masters of Clinical Psychology program at Macquarie University.

Community engagement

 Jennie has authored over 130 peer reviewed publications. She has co-authored the book “Treating anxious children: An evidence-based approach” (2000) and edited “Psychopathology and the Family” (2006).  Jennie is a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts. She is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology and serves on the editorial board for a number of international journals such as Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review, Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and Behaviour Research and Therapy.

Research interests

Jennie’s research focuses on understanding the factors that contribute to children’s emotional health and working to improve the services available to children experiencing anxiety and other emotional disorders. Jennie’s work at the Centre for Emotional Health impacts the lives of Australian families through the development of new ways of understanding and treating anxiety disorders. Her methodological expertise includes experimental studies, large-scale randomised clinical trials, prevention trials, school-based trials, gene-environment interaction studies, and systematic reviews.
