Graham is a physical oceanographer with interests in nearshore processes on beaches and reefs, and inner continental shelf processes. Following completion of his PhD in 1982 Graham worked for 4 years as a research scientist with the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography where he initiated a sea ice research program and participated in the international Marginal Ice Zone Experiment in the Greenland Sea in 1983-84. In 1986 he moved to the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. A major focus of his research while at ADFA was on rip currents and beach morphodynamics, and wave driven currents on reefs. Graham joined CSIRO in 2005 and since then has developed CSIRO’s capability in nearshore waves and wave driven currents. Using both field based studies and modelling he has studied the coupling between waves, currents, sediment transport and bathymetry, and lead the littoral zone component of the Bluelink project from June 2006 to June 2013 to develop a littoral zone forecasting capability for the RAN.  Also, since joining CSIRO, his ongoing work on reefs has included field and modelling studies on temperate reefs off Perth and coral reefs at Ningaloo and in the Kimberley. With collaborators from UWA and Curtin University a major project funded through the Western Australia Marine Science Institute commenced in June 2013 to predict the characteristics of sediment plumes due to dredging operations and was co-lead a project to assess the environmental impacts of wave energy conversion arrays.  Graham has been an Honorary Research Fellow at UWA since October 2015 and formerly left CSIRO in June 2016. At UWA Graham has co-supervised three PhD students, one completed and two who have submitted their theses for examination. Current research includes CFD modelling of sediment driven gravity currents.
