Biography

Dr Fiona Dyer is an Associate Professor in Water Science at the Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE), University of Canberra.  She is a freshwater scientist who is interested in understanding how freshwater systems respond to natural and anthropogenic variations in flow, with a view to informing decision making in water resource management. Her current research projects investigate the consequences of changes in flow regimes (associated with climate change and water resource management decisions) for water quality and ecological responses. Fiona has been extensively involved in the development and implementation of condition assessment approaches for freshwater systems, having been involved in the development of most major national and regional river condition approaches.

Fiona’s research is complemented by working closely with Catchment Management Authorities, community organisations, indigenous groups and water resource management agencies. She was instrumental in the review of the Upper Murrumbidgee Waterwatch data, demonstrating the potential for data collected by community groups to augment other government monitoring programs.  She currently leads a consortium of four government agencies and three universities to deliver the Lower Lachlan River long term environmental flow monitoring program for the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office. Fiona is a member of the ACT NRM Advisory Committee, the ACT and Region Catchment Management Coordination Group and the past Chair of the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment Network.
