Dr Bosio is currently a Research Fellow and Laboratory Head in the Centre for Clinical Research in Emergency Medicine (CCREM) (since September 9, 2015). She is a key member of this unit, contributing and participating in all aspects of the projects being undertaken by the CCREM. Dr Bosio has extensive expertise in Immunology, which has facilitated her work in transplantation, diabetes, stem cells and cancer. She spent 6 years in Italy as a post-doctoral scientist working in the field of xenotransplantation, contributing to a number of different xenotransplantation research projects, as well as clinical studies investigating antibody mediated rejection, while focusing on the assessment of neonatal porcine islets as an alternative tissue source for transplantation for type I diabetes. Following her return to Australia, she joined the Centre for Diabetes Research, investigating hES cells as an islet progenitor cell source for type I diabetes. Following career interruption for maternity and parental reasons (2011-2014), Dr Bosio returned to research part-time before accepting the position within CCREM. The current focus of work within CCREM includes the most significant causes of presentation to the Emergency Department including Sepsis, Stroke, Trauma and Anaphylaxis. This work focuses on understanding mechanisms underlying critical illness, with a particular emphasis on sepsis and anaphylaxis. Improving identification and support of critical illness in the ED is being addressed by the analysis of immune responses principally by the analysis of protein, genetic and metabolomic illness biomarkers. This work is the subject of national and international collaborations with researchers with multiple Australian tertiary hospital research units as well as Harvard, University College London and the University of British Columbia. Work is also underway to develop an innovative 3D-multilayered living model of the microvasculature to facilitate mechanistic investigations of critical illness, which is being developed as a cross-disciplinary collaboration with bioengineers and physiology from UWA and the Harry Perkins Institute. Her work with CCREM has resulted in the publication of 13 peer-reviewed articles, and supported the completion of 4 PhD candidates. She has received $300,000 in grant funding for CCREM, and is currently supporting an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence grant providing $381,455 to work on Translational Venom and Antivenom Research. She has acted as a reviewer for the NHMRC, Diabetes Australia and the Queensland Emergency Medicine Foundation.
In addition to her research roles, Dr Bosio also has a role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (since 2018), and is currently a unit co-coordinator in the School of Biomedical Sciences (IMED2001 and IMED2003)(0.35FTE), and a Graduate Research Coordinator for the Medical School at the University of Western Australia.
