Photonics dynamical systems – there is a diversity in the dynamics of light that can be obtained from photonic systems, including chaotic output. Several different dynamical outputs can be obtained from a single system in some instances. We build broad understanding of what is experimentally possible from a range of such systems – semiconductor laser based, solid state laser based, and integrated devices.
Quantifying experimental time series data – in advancing our photonics dynamical system research we research methods for analysing experimental time series data, including for quantifying complexity and chaos. We have discovered and shown how systematic experimental mapping of extended parameter spaces leads to significant enhancement in what can be learned from experimental data from nonlinear systems, which always has fundamental and technical noise in addition to the underlying dynamics of the system. These analytic tools are broadly applicable in nonlinear science.
Optics and optical materials of spider webs and spider silks, and, related bio-optics – we are pioneering studies which identify where high quality optical materials occur in nature – such as in the orb webs of certain spiders who live in high-light environments. All of the silks, the adhesive droplets and the junction cements of such orb webs can be viewed as optical elements with optical function, in addition to their mechanical role in prey capture. Quantifying the optical materials characteristics and optical function of such micro-optics requires new approaches which we research.
Nanometrology – we pioneer optical interferometric microscopy techniques for measuring certain spatial dimensions of nano- and micro-objects, including dielectric (glass and polymer) objects.
Laser materials processing – we continue to build on our novel discoveries of how pulsed lasers can be used for cleaning optical materials, dehydroxylating fused silica etc. We focus on studying materials systems which differ from those commonly under study. We pursue unexpected outcomes in our experiments and work to explain them.
Photonics based conservation science for Aboriginal and Oceania art and cultural heritage objects – we research a range of photonics-based techniques for diagnostic, archival, and conservation practice.
