Personal profile

Research interests

My research interests focus on the interaction of law, sport and regulation by conceptualising the role of regulation in responding to sport-related concerns. My doctoral studies examined the regulatory and legal frameworks around sport-related concussion and evaluated the effectiveness of current regulatory approaches in Australia. Expert supervision by regulatory and legal scholars enabled me to adopt a broader regulatory lens, recognising the polycentric nature of the domain and the broader societal context to support private and public engagement.

Other research interests include embedding principles of diversity of thought and effective representative voices in sports regulation and governance; regulating sport-related violence and the duty of care, and emerging challenges in regulating eSport.

Recent publications include book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles and legal commentary on the regulatory, governance and ethical perspectives in respect of sport-related concussion and sport-related violence.

Research Projects

I am currently working on several international research projects, including an interdisciplinary youth concussion research project (Doherty et al.); a cross-jurisdictional legal review on the duty of care of team doctors in sport-related concussion (Grey) and a multi-disciplinary collaboration evaluating effective athlete representation in sports governance (Kihl et al.)

Impact and Engagement

I regularly engage with the legal profession as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and combine both practical and academic perspectives, recognising the importance of pragmatic solutions to sport-related challenges.

I am a member of the Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Association, the Queensland Law Society and the Law Institute of Victoria.

To promote and enhance research and scholarship in the field, I am General Editor of the Bond University Sports Law eJournal, co-director of the Centre for Commercial Law, and member of the Centre for Professional Legal Education and Bond Law Research Management Group.

I co-convene the annual Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Sport, designing informative and interdisciplinary academic programs on a range of contemporary sport-related topics to disseminate and translate research.

Statement for HDR students

I am available to supervise HDR students in the areas of Sports Law, Regulatory Theory, Regulation and Contemporary Issues in Law and Society.

My research philosophy is aligned with translating research outcomes in a real and practical sense. I encourage HDR students to identify publically-stated commitments by governments and other actors that support and sustain research projects and create opportunities for impact and engagement.
